Gennie Gonzalez is a graduate of The University of North Carolina at Asheville. She earned a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology with a certificate in Applied Social Science Research. Having worked on her degree in her hometown she began to see patterns appear from the expansive new development creating further sprawl, leveling of natural environments, and an increase in social inequalities. Wanting to expand her skills to put a stop to these unsustainable patterns of growth, she worked as an intern for the City of Asheville mapping Asheville’s history of urban renewal. There she learned how to use spatial reasoning to analyze her data while developing a strong passion for urbanism. Recently, she completed the foundational certificate in geographic information systems (GIS) from Asheville-Buncombe Technical Community College.
